Call For Curator BENEATH THE SURFACE 2026-2027

Application Deadline: July 3rd, 2026

Craft NB and Fundy National Park ( FNP ) are pleased to host Beneath the Surface, a week-long artist residency in the park and independent creation period resulting in a professionally curated outdoor exhibition. The exhibition will feature site specific works created by participating artisans based on their time spent in the Park. The exhibition will open in Summer 2026 and will be displayed throughout the Summer season. In the past, this exhibition has touched 350,000 park visitors. It is an excellent opportunity for all that participate.

Beneath the Surface is a partnership between Craft NB and Parks Canada. It takes place in 3 sections:

  • A Professional Development Residency at Fundy National Park from Oct. 19th to Oct 23rd, 2026 – The curator, in collaboration with the planning team, will facilitate several informational and inspirational sessions related to craft, outdoor exhibitions, and getting to know the artists.
  • Followed by an independent creation period from November 2026 to March 2027 – The curator will act as a mentor and guide for artists, helping them work through any technical or conceptual issues they may encounter while creating and developing their work.
  • Culminating in an outdoor exhibition, Spring/Summer of 2027.

There are very few artists in New Brunswick working in outdoor installation and environmental based art. This year’s Beneath the Surface project will enable and encourage participants to experiment and develop new sustainable ways of producing and showcasing contemporary craft outdoors. For many, this will mean working with new materials, conceptualizing new ideas, and producing work on a new scale.

This position acts more as a mentor and guide throughout the entire program cycle, versus a traditional curation of completed work. Curators who are knowledgeable in a variety of craft methods and materials are encouraged to apply.
