THE DETAILS

New Brunswick Day

August 7, 2023

11:00am-7:30pm

After a few years off, we are back for our 2023 Summer Fest!  We are thrilled to be partnering with Picaroons to bring you and amazing New Brunswick day celebration on Fredericton’s North side.  20+ of Craft NB’s juried members will be set up indoors in the Picaroons Roundhouse, and outside in Carleton Park – adjacent to the brewery.

New Brunswick is home to some of the country’s most accomplished artists, and we are so proud of the immense amount of talent that New Brunswick has to offer.  We believe that craft is the embodiment of New Brunswick culture, so we are so excited to celebrate with the people of New Brunswick for this fine craft celebration!

The Venue

The Picaroons Roundhouse is the spot to be in the summer in Fredericton!  Their amazing indoor space is a converted auto-shop which houses their brewery, restaurant, bar, and plenty of seating. Their outside area has a river view, and tons of seating to enjoy a beer on a hot summer day.

Carleton Park has a lovely green space that is widely used for lawn games.  It is also a popular boat launch site, with an incredible view of downtown Fredericton. It’s the place to be at sundown for that beautiful sunset!

Summerfest Workshop Series

Craft NB’s Summer Fest is more than a fine craft market! The public is invited to celebrate New Brunwsick day in a hands-on way, by registering for a workshop led by a juried member of Craft NB. Learn how to create your own design using the indigo shibori method of natural fabric dyeing, how to carve your very own wooden spoon from tree to table, or how to use plant fibers straight from your garden to create a unique basket. Please see the workshop descriptions below, and contact Lisa at events@craftnb.ca with any questions!

Wood Spoon Carving with Barry Smith – 11:00am – 7:00pm | Ages 14+ | $150+tax

Learn how to carve your very own wooden spoon in this intensive full-day class. Spoon carving is a meditative craft that can bolster your creativity and inspire you to make something that adds a beautiful touch of nature to your kitchen.

This workshop will cover safety practices, wood types, and an introduction to basic carving techniques. At the end of the day, you will leave with a one-of-kind hand-carved wooden spoon created by you!

No experience necessary, you just need to be able to safely handle a knife and be open to try something new.

Foraged Fibre Basketry with Ralph Simpson – 11:00am – 7:00pm | Ages 14+ | $150+tax

Make a basket with plants from your garden.

Learn the processes of foraged fibre basketry including local foraging, processing, proper storage techniques, and how to prepare the fibres for use in weaving. Participants will create their very own hand-crafted basket from locally collected plant fibres!

This basketry workshop is designed for beginners and has the scope to accommodate the

interests of intermediate basket weavers as well.
